For most home, school and everyday office users, 8GB of RAM is enough. If you regularly use demanding software, work with large files or run several heavier applications at the same time, 16GB can be a worthwhile step up.

More RAM can certainly be useful, but more is not automatically better value. The right amount depends on what you actually do with your computer.

At NZ Laptop Wholesale, we generally consider 8GB the practical minimum for an everyday Windows 11 laptop. We won’t sell a Windows 11 laptop configured with only 4GB of RAM, even though Microsoft’s official minimum requirement for Windows 11 is 4GB.

For many people, 8GB works perfectly well. For others, their software and workflow make 16GB — or occasionally more — the sensible choice.

8GB vs 16GB RAM: the simple answer

If you’re trying to decide between 8GB and 16GB, this is our general rule of thumb:

  • 8GB: A good choice for everyday home, school and office computing.
  • 16GB: Worth considering for heavier multitasking, larger applications or workflows that genuinely use more memory.
  • 32GB: Usually unnecessary for ordinary laptop users and more relevant to specialised workloads.

The important part is that these aren’t performance grades.

A laptop with 16GB of RAM isn’t automatically twice as fast as the same laptop with 8GB. If your normal workload only needs 6GB, installing another 8GB doesn’t suddenly make email, Word or a website twice as fast.

It simply gives the computer more working space if it needs it.

What does RAM actually do?

RAM — Random Access Memory — is the computer’s short-term working memory.

It holds information that Windows and your currently running applications need quick access to. The more applications and data you’re actively working with, the more RAM you may require.

One way we like to explain this at NZ Laptop Wholesale comes from Chris’s previous career as a chef.

Think of your computer like a commercial kitchen

The CPU is the chef.

RAM is the chopping board and immediate workspace.

Your SSD is the large fridge down the back of the kitchen.

A bigger chopping board gives the chef more room to have different ingredients and jobs in progress at the same time.

But making the chopping board twice as large doesn’t make the chef chop twice as fast.

If the workspace becomes too small, however, the chef has to continually put things away and retrieve them again. That’s inefficient.

Computers face a similar problem. When available RAM becomes tight, Windows may need to rely more heavily on storage and shuffle data around, which can affect responsiveness.

That’s why having enough RAM matters — but simply having as much RAM as possible isn’t necessarily useful.

Is 8GB RAM enough in 2026?

Yes. We consider 8GB of RAM adequate for a large number of everyday Windows 11 users.

Typical activities include:

  • Web browsing
  • Email
  • Microsoft Word
  • Basic Excel work
  • Microsoft 365
  • Online banking
  • School and university research
  • YouTube and streaming
  • Zoom or Microsoft Teams meetings
  • Cloud-based business applications
  • General home and office administration

One reason 8GB remains practical is that a lot of modern software has moved online.

Many accounting, CRM, email, document management and other business systems are now SaaS (Software as a Service) products accessed primarily through a web browser.

That doesn’t mean browser-based applications use no RAM — modern browsers can use a reasonable amount of memory, particularly with many tabs open — but an everyday user doesn’t necessarily need huge amounts of local computing resources simply because they use several business applications.

Is 8GB enough for Windows 11?

Yes. Windows 11 runs perfectly well with 8GB of RAM for normal everyday use.

Microsoft’s official minimum requirement for Windows 11 is 4GB of RAM. However, a minimum requirement tells you what is required to run the operating system; it isn’t necessarily the specification we would recommend for a comfortable everyday computer.

At NZ Laptop Wholesale, our practical minimum is higher.

We don’t sell Windows 11 laptops with only 4GB of RAM.

For the sorts of refurbished business laptops we sell, we consider 8GB a much more sensible starting point.

As a real-world example, Chris’s own everyday laptop has 8GB of RAM and comfortably handles his normal portable workload. His production desktop has considerably more memory because the applications and workflow used on that machine genuinely require it.

That’s the distinction we think matters: choose the specification for the job.

When should you choose 16GB instead?

16GB starts making more sense when your actual workload regularly needs more memory.

That might include people who:

  • Run several larger applications simultaneously
  • Keep a very large number of browser tabs and applications open
  • Work with large or complex spreadsheets
  • Use specialist business applications with higher memory requirements
  • Do development or technical work
  • Perform some photo, graphics or media work
  • Use virtual machines
  • Have a specific application that recommends 16GB or more

There’s also nothing wrong with choosing 16GB simply because you want some extra headroom for future use, particularly when the price difference is modest.

We just wouldn’t tell every customer they need 16GB when they don’t.

Will upgrading from 8GB to 16GB make my laptop faster?

Only if RAM is currently limiting what you’re doing.

This is one of the most important things to understand when comparing laptop specifications.

If your computer regularly runs low on available memory, increasing the RAM can make a noticeable difference because Windows has more room to keep active applications and data readily available.

If you’re only using a fraction of the 8GB you already have, adding another 8GB may make little noticeable difference to your everyday experience.

Processor performance, storage, software, cooling and the workload itself can all affect how responsive a computer feels.

RAM is only one part of the machine.

More RAM doesn’t automatically mean a better laptop

It’s very easy to compare computers by looking for the biggest numbers.

16GB sounds better than 8GB.

32GB sounds better again.

An Intel Core i7 sounds better than a Core i5.

Sometimes those higher specifications genuinely are better for the job. But they normally come at a cost, and there’s little point paying for performance or capacity you’ll never use.

We sometimes explain it this way:

“A Land Cruiser will get Granny to the dairy, but so will a Corolla.”

The Land Cruiser is unquestionably capable of doing more, but that additional capability doesn’t necessarily make it the better purchase for that particular trip.

Computers are much the same.

Buy the computer that suits what you need to do, rather than simply buying the biggest specification you can afford.

What about 32GB of RAM?

For most of the home, student and general office customers we deal with, 32GB is unnecessary.

There are certainly legitimate workloads that need 32GB, 64GB or considerably more. Professional content creation, engineering, software development, virtualisation, large datasets and other specialist applications can consume substantial amounts of memory.

But once your workload genuinely requires that sort of specification, we’d also start asking whether a standard laptop is the right tool for the job.

A more powerful desktop or workstation may offer better sustained performance, cooling, expansion and value for demanding workloads.

As another saying we use goes:

“The right tool for the right job.”

Laptops are fundamentally designed around portability and power efficiency. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need. Other times a desktop or workstation makes more sense.

What about gaming, CAD and professional creative software?

RAM becomes only one part of the equation when you move into demanding applications.

Gaming, CAD, 3D modelling, professional video editing and similar workloads can depend heavily on the processor and graphics hardware as well as RAM.

Simply putting 32GB into an ordinary office laptop doesn’t turn it into a CAD workstation or gaming machine.

This is particularly relevant when buying ex-lease laptops because many business models were originally designed for office workloads and use integrated graphics.

If you have a particular piece of specialist software, we recommend looking at the software developer’s recommended hardware requirements rather than choosing a computer based on RAM alone.

Is laptop RAM upgradeable?

Often it is, but not always.

Many of the business-grade laptops we handle have replaceable or upgradeable memory. Depending on the model, this may involve one or more RAM slots that allow the memory to be replaced or expanded.

However, ultra-thin laptops increasingly use memory that is soldered directly to the motherboard.

Soldered RAM isn’t automatically a problem.

If the laptop has enough memory for its intended use, there may be no reason you would ever need to upgrade it.

The important thing is to know what you’re buying.

If you’re choosing an ultra-thin laptop with soldered 8GB RAM and expect your workload to require 16GB in the future, it makes sense to choose the higher-memory configuration from the beginning.

Should heavy users buy an ultra-thin laptop?

Ultra-thin laptops are excellent for the job they were designed to do: being light, portable and power efficient.

But portability involves compromises.

If you’re doing sustained heavy processing, using specialised professional software or need extensive upgradeability, an ultra-thin machine may not be the best choice regardless of how much RAM it has.

A slightly larger business laptop, performance laptop, desktop or workstation may be more appropriate.

Again, it comes back to matching the tool to the job.

8GB or 16GB for students?

For many school and university students, 8GB is perfectly adequate.

If the workload mainly consists of browser-based learning, research, Word, PowerPoint, email, video calls and similar tasks, there may be little benefit in paying extra for 16GB.

The subject being studied matters, though.

A student studying engineering, architecture, software development, video production or another field requiring specialist applications may benefit from 16GB or more and potentially a more powerful computer overall.

Check the requirements of the actual software used by the course rather than assuming every student needs the same specification.

8GB or 16GB for working from home?

Again, 8GB can be completely adequate for many work-from-home users.

If your working day consists mainly of email, browser-based business systems, Microsoft Office, Teams or Zoom and normal administration, an 8GB business laptop can do the job very well.

If your work involves large datasets, complex spreadsheets, specialist desktop applications or running numerous heavier programs simultaneously, we’d lean towards 16GB.

Your workflow should make the decision.

How can I tell if I actually need more RAM?

If you already own a Windows laptop, you can get a useful indication from Windows Task Manager.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then look under Performance > Memory.

Try checking it while you’re actually doing your normal work rather than immediately after starting the computer.

If your memory usage is consistently very high during your normal workload and the computer becomes sluggish as you open more applications, additional RAM may help — assuming your laptop supports an upgrade.

If you have 8GB installed and your everyday workload isn’t getting close to using it, upgrading purely because 16GB sounds better is unlikely to transform the machine.

Don’t confuse RAM with storage

RAM and SSD storage are commonly confused, but they perform different jobs.

Going back to our kitchen analogy:

RAM is the chopping board. The SSD is the fridge.

RAM provides temporary working space for what you’re doing right now.

Your SSD provides longer-term storage for Windows, applications, documents, photos and other files.

If you’re running out of space to save photos and documents, you probably need more storage, not more RAM.

If the computer struggles when you have lots of active applications and large working files open, RAM may be part of the problem.

Our practical recommendation: 8GB vs 16GB RAM

After years of dealing with business computers and helping customers choose suitable machines, our recommendation is fairly simple:

Start with what you actually need.

For general home, school and office computing, we consider 8GB a sensible minimum and adequate for most everyday users.

If you know your applications or workflow require more memory, 16GB is a worthwhile upgrade and gives you additional breathing room.

If you genuinely need 32GB or more, we’d look at the whole workload rather than RAM in isolation. You may need a higher-performance laptop, desktop or workstation rather than simply more memory.

There’s no prize for having unused RAM.

The goal is to spend your money on the parts of the computer that will actually improve what you do with it.

Can I upgrade from 8GB to 16GB later?

Often, but it depends on the laptop. Many business laptops use replaceable RAM modules, while some ultra-thin models have memory soldered to the motherboard. Check the specifications of the individual model before relying on a future upgrade.

Does more RAM make a laptop faster?

More RAM helps when the computer doesn’t currently have enough memory for its workload. Once you already have enough RAM, adding more does not automatically make the processor, SSD or applications run faster.
