How to Load Windows Onto Your Computer (Quick Reinstall Guide)

There comes a point where the cleanest fix is a fresh start: wiping the current Windows install and reinstalling it from scratch. This can help with slow performance, stubborn errors, unknown software issues, or preparing a computer for resale.

This guide is written for beginners, but it follows the same basic process we use every day in professional refurbishing, However, we have a fully scripted network deployed version of this Take your time, read the warnings, and you’ll be fine.

Important warning (read this first)

This process can permanently delete your files. If you delete partitions during setup (recommended for a clean reinstall), your current Windows installation and all data on that drive will be removed.

  • If you need anything on the PC (photos, documents, emails), back it up first.
  • If you’re not 100% sure, stop and get help before continuing.

What you’ll need

  • A USB drive (8GB minimum, 16GB+ recommended)
  • A working PC with internet (to download Windows tools)
  • Your target computer (the one you’re reinstalling Windows on)
  • Power supply connected (don’t do this on low battery)

Step-by-step: Reinstall Windows using a bootable USB

1) Download the Windows ISO (official source)

Microsoft provides official Windows download tools and ISO files. For most people, the safest option is to download the Windows ISO directly from Microsoft’s website.

  • Choose Windows 11 or Windows 10 depending on your PC and licensing
  • Save the ISO file somewhere easy to find (like Downloads)

2) Download Rufus (USB creation tool)

Rufus is a trusted utility that turns a Windows ISO into a bootable USB installer.

3) Create the bootable USB in Rufus

Plug in your USB drive (note: it will be wiped), then open Rufus and:

  1. Select your USB drive under Device
  2. Select the Windows ISO under Boot selection
  3. Use the default recommended settings (most modern PCs use UEFI)
  4. Click Start and wait until it completes

4) Boot your computer from the USB

Insert the USB into the computer you want to reinstall Windows on, then reboot it.

Most PCs require pressing a boot menu key during startup (commonly F12, F9, ESC, or DEL). Choose the USB device from the boot menu.

5) Start Windows Setup

Once the installer loads, follow the prompts for language and keyboard settings, then click Install Now.

6) Partitions: How to wipe the drive properly

When Windows asks “Where do you want to install Windows?” you’ll see partitions listed.

For a clean reinstall:

  1. Select each existing partition on the target drive and click Delete
  2. Keep deleting until you have one entry that says Unallocated Space
  3. Select Unallocated Space and click Next

Windows will automatically create the required partitions for you.

7) Finish setup (user account, region, privacy settings)

Follow the setup prompts through to the desktop. You’ll be asked about things like account setup, region/location, and privacy settings.

After installation: Updates, drivers, and checks

8) If you have internet access: Run Windows Update (including optional drivers)

Once you’re on the desktop and connected to the internet:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Windows Update
  3. Click Check for updates
  4. Install everything offered
  5. Also check Optional updates (often contains useful drivers)

You may need a few restarts and another update check afterward.

9) If you DON’T have internet access: Install the Wi-Fi or network driver

If Windows doesn’t detect your Wi-Fi or ethernet after install, you’ll need to download the network driver on another computer:

  1. Find the computer’s brand and model (usually on a sticker underneath or in BIOS)
  2. Visit the manufacturer support page (Dell/HP/Lenovo etc.)
  3. Download the Wi-Fi or ethernet (LAN) driver
  4. Copy it to a USB and install it on the target PC

Once networking is working, go back and run Windows Update again.

10) Confirm drivers are installed (Device Manager)

Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager. Look for any items with a yellow warning symbol. Those usually mean a missing driver.

11) Check Windows activation status

Go to Settings → System → Activation (or search “Activation” in Settings).

  • If the PC previously had Windows activated, it will often reactivate automatically once online.
  • If it doesn’t activate, you may need a valid licence/key for the Windows edition you installed.

Quick checklist: “Did I do it right?”

  • Windows boots normally to the desktop
  • Wi-Fi and/or ethernet works
  • Windows Update shows “You’re up to date”
  • No unknown devices in Device Manager
  • Windows shows as Activated (or you have a plan to activate)
